How You Can Volunteer at the Oakhurst Community Garden Project
Come weed, learn how to grow plants from seed, serve on a planning committee, stuff envelopes! We have a volunteer opportunity for everyone. Listed below are our volunteer opportunities along with a brief description of what is involved. We welcome whatever time you are able to give. You can come in for 1, 2, or 3 hours!
1. Site and Beautification Gardening
Hours: Monday and Thursday, 9-2 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month, 9-noon. Tasks: Planting in the vegetable and ornamental spaces, weeding, general clean-up around Garden space Contact: Jerilynn Bedingfield, jerilynnbedingfield@hotmail.com, (404) 245-1976
2. Compost Pick-up and Delivery
Hours: Monday and Thursday, flexible based on your schedule
Task: Drive to partner businesses that save their compost for us. Pick up the bagged compost and return to the Garden. Volunteer who takes this task will need to be reliable and agree to a regular schedule that is weekly, biweekly, once per month.

3. Plant Sale Coordination and Planting Hours: Monday and Thursday, 9-2 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month, 9-noon. Additional plant sale opportunities will be scheduled during the spring and fall season. Task: Sowing out seeds, transplanting, and preparing the plant sale area for continual sales. 4. Youth Programming
Hours: Vary based on programming schedule, but mostly occur from 3-5 p.m. on a daily basis.
Tasks: Support the Youth Programs Manager in planning, during, and post programs. Great way to gain environmental education experience working with youth. Contact: Myriam Van Dorp, ocgp@bellsouth.net, (404) 371-1920
5. Administrative Assistance Hours: Vary based on your schedule.Some of the work is work that can be done from your home. Tasks: Updating database, assisting with mailings, and whatever else needs doing. We can keep you busy! Contact: Stephanie Van Parys, director@oakhurstgarden.org
6. Special Events
A. Chicks in the City Symposium: February 6, 9-1 p.m.
Tasks: Help with preplanning, help the day of the event Contact: Stephanie Van Parys, director@oakhurstgarden.org
B. Earth Day Event: April 18, 2010, 1-4 p.m. Tasks: Serve on the Earth Day Committee. Plan fun filled activities for both youth and adults, music, food, etc. Help the day of the event Contact: Stephanie Van Parys, director@oakhurstgarden.org
C. Chicks in the City Coop Tour: May 1, 12-5 p.m. Tasks: Serve on the planning committee, help the day of the event Contact: Stephanie Van Parys, director@oakhurstgarden.org
D. Martinis in the Garden Event
Tasks: Auction procurement, food procurement, sponsor procurement, PR, and other tasks to make our biggest fundraiser a success. Volunteer the day of the event. Contact: Stephanie Van Parys, director@oakhurstgarden.org
E. Plant Sale: April 10, 9-4 p.m. Tasks: Help with sowing of seeds, potting up, and prepping for sale. Work the day of the sale. Contact: Jerilynn Bedingfield, jerilynnbedingfield@hotmail.com, (404) 245-1976
F. Decatur Garden Tour: September 25 and 26 Tasks: Serve on the planning committee, organize gardens, work the day of the event. Contact: Stephanie Van Parys, director@oakhurstgarden.org
G. Fruit Tree Sale: Fall 2010 Tasks: Organize orders, set plants out, work day of pickup Contact: Stephanie Van Parys, director@oakhurstgarden.org
7. Growings On Class Assistants Hours: Vary based on when classes are offered. Tasks: Volunteers attend the classes for free in exchange for helping with set up, checking students in, assisting during, and helping with clean-up. Contact: Stephanie Van Parys, director@oakhurstgarden.org |
